Mosborough U9's vs Thorne

Date: Sunday 14th October 2018

Today saw Mosborough U9's travel to Thorne Rugby Club, travelling down a wet M18. We all knew it was going to be challenging. We arrived at Thorne with everybody in good spirit and keen to get on with the game.

After a quick warm up playing Tiggy scarecrow, we started with the match. The playing conditions was challenging, with persistent rain, causing the ball to be very slippery and the hands cold. We played three 10-minute matches, which showed Mosborough U9’s getting stronger and stronger.

In the first 10-minutes, we started a bit slow allowing Thorne to run through our defence and scoring a few good tries. The lads didn’t get disheartened, they kept on trying. When we had the ball, there was some good running by Charlie, Ethan, Dylan, Connor and Hanlo. Unfortunately, Thorne’s defence was rock solid, and we did not manage to get past them. A couple of lads tried to run with the ball on their own but was forced into touch.

In the second 10-minutes, we started to improve on our defence and made some strong tackles which started to put pressure on Thorne. Our first try came from Charlie who saw a gap in their defence which he managed to get through.

Following on from the try the lads started passing the ball more which started opening more opportunities which saw Hanlo, Ethan and Ben getting over the try line as well. There was a lot of good support play from Fred, Connor, Stanley, Ethan and Alex. In defence we saw some try saving tackles made by Dylan who played in his first match for the season.

In the last 10-minutes, we played our best rugby by running good lines with the ball and a lot more supportive play and passing the ball to players who was in space, which resulted in more tries being scored. We saw some great defence work by the hole team. Alex and Fred got more involved in the game and put themselves in good support positions, they were also involved in some of our try line defending when Thorne were getting close to scoring tries.

Special thanks to Ben, Stanley, Ethan, Connor and Dylan who all volunteered to play with Thorne to ensure we had two even teams and everybody getting the same amount of game time.

Coaches Report

I am very proud of the whole team, everybody did very well. It was a close call this week for star of the week with Dylan also putting an outstanding performance in. Dylan was relentless with his tackles and running with ball, he managed to turn out of tackles and gaining ground for his team.

Thank you to the parents for bringing the team to Thorne and standing in the rain supporting the team.

Star of the Week

Ben showed true sportsmanship today, he started the day by being the first to volunteer when Thorne asked if one of our lads can help them put a full team out. He was outstanding in all levels of play, defence, running with the ball, also encouraging and motivating the team to keep going.
