Sunday saw a pulsating and enthralling match against Thorne with another superb team performance from Mosborough Under 13’s.
Mosborough were slightly short on numbers and so welcomed a loan player from Thorne. However, Thorne scored 3 quick, early tries whilst the team settled in. Added to that there was the unfortunate sight of George being supported to limp off the field with swollen knee after Thorne’s 2nd try. We weren’t halfway through the first 3rd of the game and things did not look good.
When it comes to rugby this team know a lot, but not, it seems, when they are beaten. Tariq first let Thorne know that they weren’t going to have it all their own way with a powerful run and try to make it 5-15.
Thorne regained their 3 try cushion but eventual man-of-the-match Jacob pegged it back again, 10-20. Against lesser teams Thorne then scoring twice more would have been the end of the revival, but this Mosborough team has great spirit, strength and ability and a great run by Josh, who unfortunately dropped the ball on the line whilst under pressure, showed that this game was not over, despite standing at 10-30.
Boosted by the return of George, the ice-pack having done its’ work, Mosborough continued to push on and first Josh and then George scored, 20-30. Thorne scoring once more didn’t put Mosborough heads down and as George intercepted a pass on the halfway line he left Thorne forwards standing as he tore down the pitch to score to wild celebrations on the side-lines, 25-35.
Excitement amongst those watching, already at high levels from being at the club pitch and having easy access to sausage sandwiches, was growing, and it reached near-dangerous levels when a superb run from Jacob narrowed the gap again to 30-35 and there was much checking of the score. Belief was palpable.
Thorne and Mosborough then traded tries, Thorne first before George ran the full length of the pitch to reply, then Thorne again with Josh this time pulling it back.
The excitement and celebrations for previous scores were well superseded when Tariq brought Mosborough level for the first time in the game, 45-45, a hugely deserved scoreline.
There was heartbreak, though, as the very last play of the game resulted in a try for Thorne, but the lads came off with heads held high, knowing they’d played a great game. 45-50, a points defeat, but a moral victory to be proud of.
