The impressive sweeping drive of Goole RUFC grounds was a welcome sight after some tooing and froing over the ferry bridge over the majestic river Ouse.
I felt slightly envious of Goole’s facilities: Wifi in the club house (now there’s an idea) and a view of the main pitch - I anticipated a comfortable view of the match. Sadly we had to spectate in artic conditions with a wind that blew across the plains of East Yorkshire straight from Siberia.
Studs were checked by the Ref. Off we go!
A quick start. Connor kicks off, picked up by Reuben who runs for his life, passes to Josh who touches down in the first 3 minutes. Get it nearer to the goal next time (JJ). Joel converts it – he makes it look easy. 0 – 7.
More action. Callum. Connor. Some good rooking. Rodine gets a good run but doesn’t get far enough. A scramble and a scrum, scrum again then the ball gets kicked out. Another scrum but leads to a touch down by Rodine. 0 -12. No conversion this time, sadly.
Another kick off, some more scrumming, Goole run with the ball but an excellent tackle by Rodine. Goole are determined and get a try. 5-12. No conversion.
Goole show a lot of fighting spirit (bit too much later) but Mosborough produce some good play and some excellent tackles.
Finn picks up the ball but can’t get through the Goole line. More scrum, a kick by Goole. Rodine tries but can’t get to it. Callum picks it up but was tackled. A line out by Goole and Callum is off with a bit of a winding. Replaced by Kian (oh F****! He forgot to warm up).
Line out by Sam V. A heroic run by Goole’s number 16 but he’s intercepted.
The majority of play has been at the Mosborough end so far. Goole are playing well but not well enough! More good tackling by Rodine, another scrum. Do you get the picture?
Goole’s number 13 has an unlucky tackle and injures his neck. I was impressed by the care shown by players on both sides and the game continues.
The sun comes out and it feels a bit warmer (did I mention the Siberian wind?).
Morganana says it wasn’t that cold (yes it was, you borrowed my hat a few times).
End of the first half – phew!
The second half begins with attacking play by Goole. Rodine kicks the ball up the pitch and scores 5 – 17. Then a conversion by Joel 5 – 19.
It’s cold.
Play starts again, more Goole attacking. They get a try 10 – 19. Then a conversion 12 -19.
Connor kicks off, Goole get the ball then are tackled by James. There’s a line in by Sam V. Lots of play at the side with the ball going out, being thrown in. At one point, James heads the ball (is this allowed?)! Some messy play with strong tackling on both sides. Play continues at Goole’s end. Another try for Goole 17-19. No conversion but they’re catching up!
Some good play from Finn and then the match is marred by some ungentlemanly behaviour. Line in by Sam V, Connor is tacked and then Joel’s run is halted.
Rodine does a great run which is finished into a try by Joel 17- 24 and a conversion by Joel 17 – 26 with the help of the ref who has hold the ball to stop it falling over (have I mentioned the cold wind?).
Bit more play but then its all over.
Another great match!
